Nebraska football will be headed to Ireland after all. Thursday, it was announced that Nebraska will take on Northwestern to open the 2022 season in Dublin.
Initially, Nebraska football was supposed to take on Illinois in Ireland this year. However due to the pandemic, things changed a little bit in that regard.
There are a couple of things that I really like about this announcement. For one, Nebraska will face off against a Northwestern team that has given them good games over the past couple of seasons. The Wildcats beat Nebraska 21-13 last year, in what was a frustrating game. I will be excited to see how these two teams play each other once again. First things first, we have to look towards this season. I’ll get into that other the more down the road.
Secondly, I love the fact that Nebraska will be playing a conference opponent to start off the season. This will give them a chance to really set the tone for conference play and have the opportunity to get them an early win right off the bat. We all know that the conference schedule for Nebraska is not easy. Again, the Wildcats are no pushover to be clear. However, Northwestern matches up well with Nebraska in comparison to the rest of the Big Ten.
A win for Nebraska would automatically put them at the top of the conference, and that could be a huge tone-setter for the program. It would be a nice boost for a program that has not had too many boosts in recent memory.
The only thing that I can see as a real downside to this is that Nebraska football is going to have to do a lot of traveling to open the season. However, once Nebraska is able to get to Ireland and get acclimated, it should be less of an issue.
All and all, make your plans for 2022. Nebraska and Northwestern will go toe-to-toe in what should be a fun battle.
