Nebraska Football: Tyreke Johnson checking out Lincoln certainly notable

I told you June was going to be busy, and for Nebraska football it certainly has been to this point. Thursday, former five-star defensive back Tyreke Johnson visited Lincoln.

Johnson was formally committed to Ohio State and redshirted in the 2018 season.  He has not really played a ton for Ohio State. He played in eight games in 2019, and he tallied three tackles. Johnson played in four games in the 2020 season and tallied five tackles. The most snaps he has played in a game is 19.

What could he bring to Nebraska football?

I was watching some of his film from the Army Bowl, and I really liked what I saw. Granted, he was playing in a one-on-one situation but still, there were some things that I could pick up that could be positives for Nebraska football. For one, it seemed like he was very physical. That would certainly be able to fit well in the Nebraska football secondary.

Another thing that I really liked was that he seemed to be able to cover receivers well. Nebraska football has done well with getting cover corners into the program over the past couple of seasons.  Frankly, that’s what you need now in today’s era of pass-friendly football.

Not only that, he has veteran experience. It may not seem like he has a ton due to the fact that he has played limited snaps. Nevertheless, he was on the Ohio State roster, and he was on the sidelines for some major games. He has the experience of big-time college football.

Nevertheless, he has limited snaps. In that respect, I would consider him still a bit raw in terms of skills. We don’t really know what his full potential will be  yet. However, hopefully we will see some of it in Lincoln on Saturdays. If he were to commit to the Nebraska football program, his upside would be huge.

I will be very interested to see what comes of this visit. Will Johnson commit to Nebraska? To be quite honest with you, this time frame is like the Wild West. Teams are finally able to get players on campuses, and I could definitely see some big names committing to some surprise schools.

Johnson would be a good get for the Nebraska football secondary, and he would give them additional depth at a position that has historically been deep for Nebraska over the past couple of seasons. That would certainly be a bonus for sure.
