Nebraska Football: Newest walk-on makes most of his opportunity

Nebraska football added a walk-on kicker to their program on Friday. Brendan Franke has joined the program and had his first lifting session with the team on Friday.

This isn’t just some random pickup. He worked out for the Nebraska football coaches earlier this month, and put on a show. He nailed 46, 50 and 63-yard field goals in front of the coaching staff.

He played football at Morningside University.

Nebraska football currently has five kickers on the roster, including Connor Culp. Culp was sensational for Nebraska football last season,  winning Big Ten Kicker of the Year honors.

Does Nebraska football need another kicker? No, not necessarily. However, it’s never bad to have too many kickers then you have a lack of depth at the position. Just think about the 2019 season . Nebraska football really struggled at that position, and it really hurt the Huskers in many games. Having all these kickers on the roster can at least guarantee that Nebraska football is going to have options. This could be an intriguing position battle when fall camp begins.

From the sounds of it, Franke really impressed of the coaching staff. This is what these types of camps and opportunities are all about.

“I did my first (kickoff) and coach Frost looked at me and said, ‘Can you do that again?’ And then I kicked it and it sailed through the back of the end zone and landed right against the wall outside the end zone,” Franke said then. “It was just a phenomenal day overall. I had a really good time getting to know the coaches. Hour by hour, it went by pretty fast.”

You’ve heard the phrase performing under pressure. It sounds like Frankie did just that. Nebraska football has made good use of the walk-on program over the past couple of years, and with this latest pick up, they address a position where there are not a ton of options beyond Culp.

With Culp a senior, Nebraska really needs to start thinking about life after him. They are doing that here, and although future kickers may not be as good as he has been in his short time in Nebraska, it never hurts to prepare them for the future.

I’ll be intrigued to see if Franke can make his mark. He certainly sounds promising, and he definitely has potential. It just goes to show the hard work can indeed pay off.
