Nebraska Football: Austin Allen confident in Adrian Martinez

Nebraska Cornhuskers tight end Austin Allen #11 Football vs Minnesota

With Big Ten media days wrapping up, Nebraska football definitely had some notable quotes as the team heads into preseason camp. One player who spoke at length during these media days was tight end Austin Allen.

Allen has been more of a vocal leader of the course of the past couple of months. We saw during the spring how he was willing to step up and take on a bigger role. That appears to be a goal of his heading into the fall as well. The upperclassman is going to be tasked with leading the tight end position, one that has not been targeted quite frequently over the past couple of years.

However, Nebraska football started to throw to the tight end more last year, and that led to success. With the talent that the incoming tight ends possess, we should see that change for the future. As for now, Allen is focused on leaving his mark in Lincoln.

However, it is more than just about leaving a mark for Allen. He seems very confident in his teammates heading into 2021. One of those teammates includes quarterback Adrian Martinez. After a rough season last year, Martinez looks to get back into the swing of things. Martinez has looked very confident according to Allen, and he could be in line for substantially better production in what was a strange year last year.

We have heard this story before in terms of the preseason hype. However, I’m at least encouraged by what Allen has to say. Not only does he want to see Martinez succeed, he also doesn’t care how it gets done.

“He’s got nothing to lose. He’ll tell you he’s had a couple off years the last couple years. He had a great freshman year and he’s trimmed down 15 pounds this offseason,” the junior from Aurora continued. “He’s the second fastest guy on the team right now (in pro agility stuff). It’s crazy. I think you’re going to see a completely different Adrian that we’ve seen the last couple years. It’s going to be for the better as a leader, as a player, and his character.”

I’m certainly excited to hear this. If a teammate says it, I feel as though there is more validity than if a member of the media says it. It seems like both Allen and Martinez want to see this program succeed. They have had too many years of losing. Now, it’s about putting up results.

Although I am specifically pointing out Allen and Martinez, it’s up to the whole team to produce. Quite frankly, there hasn’t been enough of it in recent years.
