As the preseason awards continue to be handed out, Nebraska football is represented on another list Tuesday. Linebacker JoJo Domann was named to the Nagurski Award Watch List.
The award itself is given to the nation’s top defensive player. It is not specific to a position. The award is voted on by the Football Writers Association of America.
Domann looks to have another strong season after playing well last year. He was a vital part of the Nebraska football defense. Domann started in eight games, and recorded 58 tackles, five pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Domann was all over the field at times last year. The Penn State game was a great example. He recorded 12 tackles in that contest.
I personally have always thought of him as the anchor for this defense. The energy he plays with and the physicality he brings to the table are unmatched. You have heard me rave all off-season about the veterans returning for this defense. He is certainly a big part of that, and I am anxious to see how he performs this year.
The linebacker position is going to be one of the strongest groups for Nebraska football. Domann will undoubtedly be leading the charge at a position that has a nice mix of both the youth and veteran talent. given how he was able to perform last season, I could see them winning this award. If he can continue to play with consistency, I could see him playing at a high level.
In any event, I can bet that he would rather have wins on the field than individual awards. As he enters his final season with Nebraska football, he will undoubtedly play an important role in what the program wants to do. Hopefully, he will find himself on several award lists at the end of next season.
