Nebraska Football: Adrian Martinez impressed with work of Betts

Nebraska football quarterback Adrian Martinez spoke at length last week about a little bit of everything. One thing he touched on was the improved play of a sophomore wide receiver.

Zavier Betts burst onto the scene last year, quite literally. Perhaps his most memorable play of 2020 was a 45-yard reverse run against Penn State. That injected some life into the offense, and also gave us a glimpse of the potential future for Nebraska football at the wide receiver position.

As noted by Martinez, Betts has been making strides this offseason. Perhaps even more important than that, Martinez has spoken to Betts about what his role in this program should be. Me personally, I believe the wide receiver should play a big role in the future of the program.

Betts has things in his favor

Why do I think that? I think for couple of reasons. For one, is a local kid. The Bellevue West product breaking out would be a fun follow for Nebraska football fans for that reason. Secondly, you can’t deny his skill. Heck, we saw it on the run against the Nittany Lions. He has the speed and quickness to be a big-time playmaker.

For those reasons alone, I believe he is a perfect fit in the Nebraska football offense. Heading into 2021, I believe he really has the chance to have a breakout year. As Martinez indicated, he believes the same thing. When asked about who has worked hard this summer, he gave one answer in particular.

“There are a lot of guys,” the quarterback said. “But I would say Zavier Betts. He’s put in a ton of work this summer.”

“We’ve had a decent amount of personal conversations about what he means to this team,” Martinez said. “I think he’s a difference-maker.”

Bold take. He will definitely be able to improve on the 12 receptions for 131 yards he had last season. He will definitely have the opportunity to be a focal point for the Nebraska football offense. If nothing else, his skill set and his ability to run after the catch makes him extremely deadly.

In  my personal opinion, the sky’s the limit for him.
