Nebraska Football: Bryce Benhart ready to change culture on o-line

Throughout the past two years of covering the Nebraska football program, the offensive line has been a topic of discussion. It’s been a rather polarizing topic at that. Sometimes, fans are happy about the play of the line. Other times, the fans can’t stand in the way the line has played. For me the play of the line was underwhelming last year. As noted on Monday, Nebraska football looks to change that.

Bryce Benhart is one of the players who was slated to change the culture of the Nebraska football offensive line. After all, he was part of the talented 2019 class that also included Ethan Piper as another offensive  lineman. Now, Benhart  is excited about what the line brings to the table, as he is in the thick of the equation.

Toughness will be a part of line

Heading into Saturday, the line will be one of the many position groups that will be watched closely. In speaking to the media on Monday, Benhart indicated what type of play we should expect out of the line itself. Let’s just say it will endear the line to Nebraska football fans. They will play a brand of Nebraska-style football.

“Our biggest strength is our grittiness and anger,” Benhart said. “G (Greg Austin) talks about attention to detail, anger and that’s a big thing right there. I’d say our detail, anger and aggressiveness is going to be there.

“It’s the motivation to finish. Get that extra two yards or extra yard. Or that extra push. Get behind the running back and get that first down. Get stuck at the goal line and push behind the pile for a touchdown.”

Finishing is something that the Nebraska football line needs to do. Last year at times, I thought they were able to get the job done. Now, they have a young group with a little bit of experience. In particular, the 2019 recruiting class is going to come into focus. There were several talented lineman in that class. Now, they will look to play big roles for the program both out of necessity end opportunity.

As Nebraska football gets ready to kick off on Saturday. I will be intrigued to see how that position group plays. Improvement on the line is going to be necessary if Nebraska football wants to win football games. The future is now at the position, and it appears that they are ready with a play style that fits Nebraska perfectly.
