Nebraska Football: Oliver Martin should be stabilizer on WR unit

When you look at the Nebraska football offense, there has obviously been a little bit of concern as to the lack of production from the wide receiver position. There is good reason for concern, as Nebraska has talent at the position. However, one player who really shown on Saturday was wide receiver Oliver Martin.

I remember saying that Martin could have a big role in the off-season, and I was laughed at. However, we saw on Saturday what he could do. It just made me reaffirm my thinking that he will be a key part of this offense.

On the afternoon, Martin recorded six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. A 43-yard reception was his longest of the afternoon. He was able to show his explosiveness, and that allowed him to be a favorite target for quarterback Adrian Martinez.

Martin has fundamentals

He is not the type of receiver that is going to put up All-American numbers every single game, but Saturday was certainly a nice start. He showed that he could be depended upon. In addition, he showed that he could produce on a receiving unit that is still struggling to find its identity.

Martin does not have the breakaway speed or the amazing one-handed catching ability. What he does have is solid fundamentals. That will certainly get him far in the college football world. He is a solid route-runner, and he has good hands. Those are certainly assets to the Nebraska football passing game, especially right now.

I’ll be interested to see what he does on Saturday, in a game that should be an easy one for Nebraska. Then again, no Nebraska football game is easy. Even still, Martin should be able to get his chance at providing a spark at the receiving end. He has already shown he can be a reliable weapon, now it’s about building off that.

To be honest, several players need to build off of solid games on Saturday. However, Martin needs to continue to be a reliable production for the wide receiving unit. The wide receiver position has to get production from somewhere on that unit. If Martin is the guy, then so be it. He has veteran experience needed to be successful, and Nebraska football needs guys like him to produce more than ever. I’m going to be looking for him to continue his production on Saturday.
