You heard me just to rave about the performance on the ground, but there were also some notable performances through the air. Take for example Nebraska football wide receiver Samori Toure. Together with Adrian Martinez, he was able to put together a solid game. After struggling last week, he made his presence known on Saturday.
From the beginning, Martinez made it very clear that he was going to throw to the wide receiver. It seemed early on that Martinez made it a point to throw the football to him. Toure was up for the challenge. On the day, the wideout recorded eight receptions for 133 yards. Averaging 16.6 yards per reception, a 31-yard catch was his longest of the day.
Toure did it all on Saturday
Perhaps even more than just statistics, he looked extremely comfortable on the field. He ran his routes crisply, and settled into the soft spots in the Fordham defense. He was able to make things happen after the catch, and it was evident that Martinez gained more trust in him as the game wore on.
Solid route-running and good hands were two things I noticed about him immediately upon watching his film for the first time in January. Those two things were on full display Saturday.
Last week, you heard me say that Nebraska football needs to use their weapons. They did on Saturday, and Toure helped them reap the benefits. Between his quickness as well as his ability to make things happen with the ball in his hands, he was a consistent weapon for Nebraska all afternoon. Hopefully, this will be a sign of things to come
Furthermore, it looked like he had a strong rapport with Martinez. If he can establish himself as one of Martinez’s top wide receivers, that could go a long way towards Martinez gaining confidence and feeling comfortable on the field. It’s been a couple seasons since he has had that type of weapon.
It’s always important for a quarterback to have a security blanket, and the wide receiver showed that he has the qualities to be one. I was really impressed with his effort, and I’m hoping he can continue to provide that same level of play throughout the course of the season. If he can that would be a big boost for the Nebraska football offense. Yes, it was only one game, but Samori Toure showed that he could be a top target for this Nebraska football program.
