Nebraska Football: Jaquez Yant asserts himself in dominant win

There was a lot to like about the 56-7 Nebraska football win over Northwestern. It seemed like the entire offense was firing on all cylinders. One player in particular who really impressed meas running back Jaquez Yant.

Re-watching the game, he was an absolute dominant force. Statistically, he recorded 13 carries for 127 yards, averaging 9.8 yards per play. A 64-yard run was his longest of the evening. Sure, Adrian Martinez may have had the best day in terms of touchdowns. He had three on the evening. However, I was most impressed by not because he was able to assert himself right from the very beginning.

To me, this reaffirmed a couple of things. One, Nebraska has a ton of depth at the running back position. Secondly, he is as explosive a player as I thought he was. I was really impressed with him during the spring game. At the time I remember thinking that he could be a valuable piece in an unproven Nebraska football running back room.

Now that the room has begun to prove itself, he is just another talented depth piece. That is not a bad thing, as he certainly has skill. On that 64-yard run he showcased all of his skills. He was able to get to the edge, and use his quick feet to gain the upper hand on the Northwestern defenders. Once he got to the open field, he showed off his power running ability. He is not the fastest running back, but his physicality on this play allowed him to take down Northwestern defenders for the score.

He is a quick decision-maker who is difficult to bring down in the open field. Not only that, the gets up field immediately. I love how quick he is in making his reads and how he is able to find open holes quickly.

Yant has game-changing ability and he showed that last night. He was almost a guaranteed first down every time he touched the football. The electricity he showed from the spring carried over to last night. In what is a crowded running back room, he made his case to be at the forefront of it. All his skills were on display, and it was a major boost to the Nebraska football running game.
