Nebraska Football: Hiring an OC must be diligent, thorough process

The dust is finally beginning to settle as Nebraska football undergoes changes on the coaching staff. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Scott Frost noted that one of his first orders of business was to find a new offensive coordinator.

Frost indicated that he had been handling a large part of the playcalling duties. It sounds like he wants to begin to delegate some of those duties. From what it sounds like, he is going to work extremely hard to find the proper offensive coordinator. Personally, I am intrigued to see who he interviews and what type of coordinator he looks for.

Frost makes priorities clear

I do think that the up-tempo, running quarterback offensive system can work when plays are called properly. On the flipside, it’s been evident that Nebraska football wants to shift a little bit more to the running game this year. Nevertheless, the one thing that has been a constant in a Scott Frost-led offense is a running quarterback. I don’t expect that to change.

“It’s not going to be easy. I’ve got to find somebody that I trust,” he said. “I’m an offensive guy. I’m always going to have something to do with it. There’s things about being a coach at Nebraska that I haven’t been able to enjoy because of all the time I’ve been spending trying to fix problems and dig ourselves out of a hole and get the team better. And I spend a lot of time offensively too. Not that I didn’t have the right guys. I can’t say enough good about them. But I really need to be able to trust somebody. I’ll still be involved, but that will take a lot off my plate and I think help me even better in some other areas.”

I do not think Nebraska football needs to reset their offensive style entirely. I do think that there needs to be better playcalling. A running quarterback and a balanced offense can mesh together, despite what we have seen over the past couple of years. It does not have to be all or nothing and it shouldn’t have to be.

Frost is going to have to find an offensive  coordinator that meshes with the style he wants to run. I’ll be intrigued to see who his list of candidates are. Judging by his priority list, it sounds like we may find out sooner rather than later.

The hire of an offensive coordinator is going to be crucial. The offense needs an overhaul, that much is clear Now, it’s time to see who the program views as the best fit for the job.
