Nebraska Football: Cam Jurgens should head to NFL if stock is high enough

As Nebraska football players make choices about whether to head to the NFL, there are going to be a lot of decisions made in the coming days. One of the players who has to make a decision  is center cam Jurgens. He is a player that really played well this year.

In 2019 and 2020, he was very unpolished as a center. A former tight end, it kind of made sense that he struggled a bit. However, in 2021 he performed much better. He cleaned up his snapping issues and became extremely reliable. It was great to see him really excel and become the center we all thought he could be.

As he is weighing his options about going professional, this is an interesting decision to me. If I was Jurgens, I would personally strike while the iron is hot and go to the NFL. I said the same thing about Austin Allen when he made his decision not to come back to Nebraska. Strike while the stock is high, because it may never be this high again. Jurgens is coming off a really good year . Not only that, he is built for the NFL.

Measuring in at six-foot-three, 291 pounds, Jurgens could turn into a really good NFL center when he develops a bit more. As it stands right now, he could have an opportunity to come back. If he does, that could give Scott Frost more opportunities to build around the line. As noted by Steven M. Sipple, Jurgens does have draft projections.

Those with knowledge of Jurgens’ situation say recent projections suggest the Beatrice native could be drafted in the middle rounds — the third, fourth or fifth. On the other hand, if he would return to school in 2022, some feel he could bump up his stock.

I would love to see him back with Nebraska football. However if his stock is high enough to where he feels he can get drafted, I would certainly implore him to do so. Truthfully, he plays a position where being drafted in the later rounds doesn’t necessarily correlate to a lower career projection. If a quarterback were drafted in a lower round than expected, then that would hurt his stock. However, with a center, I feel like it’s a little bit different.

In any event, I’ll be watching to see what  Jurgens does and when he makes his decision. He certainly has turned around his career at Nebraska.
