In my opinion, this is a huge loss for the Nebraska football coaching staff. Tuioti has spent the last three seasons with Nebraska. The defensive line has shown improvement, particularly in defending the run. The growth from where they were when he got here has been impressive.
In addition to just growth on the field, Tuioti is a solid recruiter. His most recent string of commitments were three-star defensive lineman Brodie Tagaloa and four star linebacker Wyden Ho’ohuli. He also was active in the recruiting of current players on the roster. Nash Hutmacher and Jalen Weaver were both recruited by him.
Between the West Coast recruiting connections that he has, as well as the improvement of the line, this is a major loss for Nebraska football. It is definitely evident that he is a good coach and a good teacher. You heard me talk about it all this season. Incremental growth at each position was important to me. I saw it in the defensive line. You can tell that the players like him and respect him. He is in control of his positional unit.
This is the day and age we live in now. College coaches move just as quickly as the players. Now, he gets to use his West Coast recruiting connections to benefit Oregon. This is a huge get for the Ducks coaching staff. Tuioti is a very solid recruiter on the West Coast and a great coach. For a new head coach in Lanning this is a major yet. Good for him.
I’ll just keep it frank, I am not a fan of this. What Tuioti brought to Nebraska was extremely important. He offered structure and consistency. Those two things alone are something Nebraska football has not had in quite some time. Now, it looks like they will have to find a new defensive line coach.
