The rumor mill is continuing to swirl for Nebraska football, and late Thursday night, we may have found out additional news. Former LSU wide receiver Trey Palmer is in Nebraska’s student directory.
Palmer was the 18th overall wide receiver in the 2019 class, and the sixth overall player in the state of Louisiana per the 247Sports Composite rankings. A four-star recruit, he committed to LSU on August 1, 2018.
Palmer officially entered the transfer portal on December 16. He was a junior for the Tigers in the 2021 season. He served both the roles of wide receiver and punt returner. He caught 30 passes for 344 yards and three touchdowns. He had 142 yards on kick returns to boot.
What can he bring to Nebraska football?
Palmer measures in at 6 feet, 178 pounds. One of the things that I noticed immediately when watching his film was his speed. He uses his speed for a couple of things. For one, that helps him win his matchups against defensive backs. As soon as the ball is snapped, he can use that speed to his advantage. He didn’t really have to do any sort of double move, he just let his athleticism take over.
Secondly, he runs well after the catch. It was very evident that he was good at running multiple routes. In addition to just streaking down the field, he also was successful with curls and bubble screens. Again, that’s where that speed element comes into play.
I’ve mentioned it before and I’ll say it here again. Mickey Joseph likes two particular qualities out of his receivers. He likes the downfield threat type of receivers, and he likes receivers who have speed. Palmer has both of those qualities.
I really underestimated the impact that Mickey Joseph would have on the Nebraska football program. Just in a few short weeks, he has revamped the entire wide receiver room. if Palmer comes into the program, that would be another huge get. Nothing is confirmed, but all signs are pointing that way.
