It’s been a fun couple of days for Nebraska football in terms of recruiting. Tuesday night, they got some more news in regards to a possible junior college player. Javier Morton intends to visit Nebraska this weekend.
Morton previously played at Garden City Community College. He was once a sought-after recruit out of Georgia, but the junior college route seemed like the more reasonable path for him to go down in the end.
Morton had 30 offers out of high school and was committed to Alabama at one point. However, he never ended up taking any visits and remained unsigned.
He played in nine games for Garden City Community College and finished with 20 tackles, a sack, and a fumble recovery. He has three years of eligibility remaining.
What he can he bring to Nebraska football?
Measuring in at six-foot-two, 197 pounds, Morton is listed on 247Sports as a safety. One of the things I noticed when watching his film, was that he was very good in terms of instincts. He had good closing speed, and identified where the ball was going rather quickly. Morton was also very good in pass coverage. Especially when it came to red-zone types of plays where a receiver had a jump ball, he excelled in those.
This is where I think he could be an asset to Nebraska football. Nebraska has done a good job of developing cover corners and Martin would fit the bill there. The type of physicality he brings to the table is something that Nebraska football has seemed to look for in all of their players in the secondary. Guys like Deontai Wiliams and Cam Taylor-Britt come to mind. Those types of hybrid players have worked well at Nebraska.
I will be interested to see what comes of his visit on Saturday. Nebraska football is on a recruiting hot streak, and I don’t expect that to end anytime soon.
