Nebraska Football: New RB coach Brian Applewhite a smart, sensible hire

Nebraska football officially hired a running backs coach on Thursday. The team announced former TCU running backs coach Brian Applewhite would take the position.

Applewhite is a little bit of a different hire than some of the others on the coaching staff. Mickey Joseph for example has taken on the role of recruiter in addition to wide receivers coach. Applewhite was the recruiting coordinator for Colorado State during his time there. Recruiting coordinators deal a lot with organization and getting talent into the program. Although he may not be a major recruiter, he still will have a big role.

I’ll be interested to see his impact on the field. While at TCU, his running backs had 24 100-yard rushing games. That certainly counts for something. Nebraska football has had trouble getting production out of the running back spot for quite some time. It sounds like Applewhite will be able to help the room reach their full potential. Having a coach that can get the most out of his players in a certain scheme is a good thing. This is something that Nebraska football was missing last year.

Nebraska football has talent in the running back room. If Applewhite is able to take those players and help them maximize their full potential, that will certainly be an upgrade. For example, in the 2020 season running backs Zach Evans and Kendre Miller had the second-and fifth-best season yards per carry averages in TCU history with 7.7 and 7.2 yards respectively. If Applewhite can get that out of the Nebraska football running backs, I would be extremely happy.

Overall, I am happy with this move. He may not be a sexy name, but he is somebody that has experience in multiple areas. He has results to prove that he has been successful. With all of the new coaching additions , being well-rounded is something that is a key feature with all of them. Applewhite certainly fits the bill there. His results show more so on the field, and that is something I am okay with. Now, I can’t wait to see his imprint on the running back room.
