An interesting development was pointed out on Thursday. Florida State transfer quarterback Chubba Purdy is planning to visit Nebraska on Friday. However, it appears he is already enrolled in the school. His name is listed in the student directory. The last time we had one of these instances, wide receiver Trey Palmer ended up announcing he was coming to the program.
Purdy has long been talked about as a potential candidate for the Nebraska football quarterback position. Right now, the Nebraska football quarterback room is headlined by Texas transfer Casey Thompson. However, Nebraska has made it clear that they want to have additional, experienced depth in the room.
Purdy’s name has been floated around as a potential fit for Nebraska. Mark Whipple offered the quarterback, and he’s now Nebraska’s offensive coordinator. Purdy suffered an injury in 2020, but was able to see the field a little bit. He saw 102 snaps, and went 27-of-53 for 219 yards.
Purdy only played 17 snaps this season before entering the portal.
Setting up for the future
This is certainly an interesting development. I wonder if he will end up committing to the school on either Friday or Saturday. He took a visit to Oklahoma on Wednesday, and is in Nebraska as we speak. It is worth noting he is not in the Oklahoma student directory.
This is certainly an interesting development just from a quarterback room talent point of view. We have now gone from not having a lot of depth at the quarterback position to having a lot of it. The key thing here is, the depth we have now brings experience to the table.
I’m not discounting the other quarterbacks we had prior to these developments. Logan Smothers got some playing time this year, just not enough to warrant a full-time starting job. Heinrich Haarberg is still very raw, we don’t know what we are getting from him.
This is also a year in which Nebraska football needs to win now. Jobs are on the line. Bringing in as much veteran depth as possible is certainly a good thing. This is the college football world we live in now. The transfer portal is becoming a huge factor in how programs build rosters. Just look at Michigan State. They were able to build via the transfer portal, and they had a fair amount of success in 2021.
I’ll be interested to see what happens this weekend and if he commits to the program officially. Either way, this is been a successful couple of weeks for Nebraska football in terms of recruiting. Let’s hope the good vibes keep coming.
