On Friday, Nebraska football extended an offer to 2023 four-star quarterback Avery Johnson. Johnson is the 11th overall quarterback in the 2023 class, and the second overall player in the state of Kansas per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He currently has no Crystal Ball predictions at this time.
In addition to Nebraska, Johnson also has offers from the likes of Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Notre Dame, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. Special teams coordinator Bill Busch extended him the offer. It’s certainly good to see him getting out in the thick of things in terms of recruiting.
How would he help Nebraska football?
There are couple of things that I really liked when I watched Johnson’s film. First, he is able to deliver the football quickly and make his read. This definitely falls in line with what Nebraska football wants to put under center under Mark Whipple. Secondly, he seemed to do a good job of recognizing pressure from within the pocket. He was able to step up and make a throw, without letting the pressure get to him.
Johnson was able to make throws on the run, but that’s not his primary method of moving the ball down the field. He is a pass-first quarterback. He can however get out of the pocket to keep plays alive.
Currently, he measures in at six-foot-two, 170 pounds. If he is able to add just a little bit more weight, he would be the ideal size for a college quarterback. He has all the intangibles to be able to be successful, and it’s smart that Nebraska was able to offer him.
Currently, the 2023 recruiting class has two commitments, Local stars Gunnar Gottula and Benjamin Brahmer are the only commitments in the class right now. Johnson would undoubtedly be a staple of this class, and he would be able to solidify the Nebraska quarterback position.
I’ll be interested to see how his recruitment plays out. Do I think Nebraska is the favorite in this scenario? No, I do not. However, at least they are testing the waters in this regard.
