Nebraska Football: Spring ball important for Noa Pola-Gates

There has been a lot of talk about the depth on the defensive side of the football. On Tuesday, the Lincoln Journal-Star wrote a piece talking about some of the Nebraska football players that are at a crucial point in their collegiate careers. One of them was safety Noa Pola-Gates.

Gates was a recruit in the class of 2019. Making his announcement in January of that year, I was really excited to see him come to Nebraska at that time. So far, he hasn’t seen a ton of playing time. However, that is through no fault of his own. The safety position has been absolutely loaded.

In his Nebraska football career, he has recorded five total tackles. The most he ever recorded in a season was three back in 2020. Now, he may have a chance to make a bigger impact. With Marquel Dismuke and Deontai Williams no longer in the picture, this could drastically affect his playing time in a good way. It would have been very difficult to justify starting him over seniors.

It’s also important to note that Nebraska football added a little bit of depth at the position. DeShon Singleton was added in December, and he could figure to play a role in the safety rotation. Javier Morton figures to be a part of the equation as well. Just in terms of system familiarity, I would give Pola-Gates a little bit of an edge in that department.

Particularly when Dismuke and Williams were solid during their careers, it would have been difficult for Nebraska football to try and slide him into certain situations. Now that they are both gone though, Pola-Gates will have a chance to really make an impact. I’ll be interested to see what I hear about him during spring ball. He is a hard-hitting athletic playmaker and I think he is going to fit really well in this Nebraska football defense. For him, it’s all about opportunity.

I will be interesting to see exactly where he fits moving forward. There is safety depth, but a lot of it is unproven. This is where Pola-Gates may have an edge. Safety depth will be intriguing to watch during spring practices.
