Sunday night, Nebraska football was able to get some good news. 2023 three-star lineman Sam Sledge committed to the program.
If the last name sounds familiar, it should. Sledge’s father Bob started for the program in the 1987 and 1988 seasons. Now, his son looks to follow in his father’s footsteps.
This is certainly a big commitment for the program for a couple of reasons. For one, it allows them to continue building a fence around the state of Nebraska. They have done a nice job of landing 2023 prospects from the state. Three out of the four commitments in the 2023 class are from the state of Nebraska.
On the offensive side of the ball, he is a very sturdy player as a lineman. As soon as the ball is snapped, he is able to extend his hands and get the advantage on his man. This in turn helps him create running lanes. He would help Nebraska football improve in pass protection as well as allow the running backs to get into open space.
On the defensive side of the ball, he has good instincts. This allows him to read a play quickly . He is very good in terms of his closing speed. He doesn’t often overrun plays, and that allows him to be able to man his position effectively.
Sledge should work well on Nebraska football offensive line
He was recruited by Donovan Raiola, so that makes me think that Nebraska football will use him as an offensive lineman. This is an area where they need to continue to build out the position. Either way, they can’t lose. For Raiola, Sledge is another solid athlete that he can work with, in what is becoming a talented offensive lineman room.
The 2023 Nebraska football recruiting class ranks 21st overall nationally and sixth overall in the Big Ten per the 247Sports composite rankings. I expect that number to increase as the season goes on. Right now, the class has four solid commitments.
