Nebraska Football was the beneficiary of a bunch of transfer additions this off-season. One of them was corner Omar Brown. The former Northern Iowa star picked the Nebraska football program in January. Even as he battles back from injury, he has the potential to get playing time.
He was the 2019 FCS Defensive Freshman of the Year and has some starting experience. He started in 14 games over the last two seasons, including that impressive 2019 campaign. That year, he recorded 77 tackles and six interceptions. He received several accolades that season, including being named to the Associated Press All-American Third Team and the Phill Steele All-American First Team.
More recently, he played in seven games before a season-ending injury in 2021. He recorded 33 tackles on the year and forced a fumble in addition to recording an interception.
He certainly brings a lot of potential to the Nebraska football program. As the Huskers look to rebuild their secondary, he could be the answer to fix that. As it stands right now however, all the Nebraska football coaches can go on his film from Northern Iowa.
Brown could make impact for Nebraska football soon
Although Brown is recovering from an injury this spring, the thinking from the coaches is that Brian will be able to start pretty soon once he gets healthy, as noted in a report from Brian Christopherson.
Cornerback Omar Brown is a roster addition with a resume that suggests he could immediately battle for time – when healthy.
“He’s just got a ton of good film from the time he was a young guy to the time he decided to move on,” Chinander said. “Obviously me being at Northern Iowa, I’ve got a bunch of resources to call once he gets in that thing and find out (about him). It’s not like all these other guys where somebody gets in the portal and I’ve got to go watch the film and try to find someone to call.”
It seems like in Brown’s case, it’s not a matter of if he can play but when he will be able to. Nebraska football fans should be excited about his potential, as he should give Nebraska a major boost to the secondary. Nebraska football was able to get a high-quality player in Brown. Now, it’s just about making sure he is healthy enough to do so.
