Nebraska Football: Casey Thompson details why he chose Huskers

Casey Thompson was one of the big off-season additions for Nebraska football. With Adrian Martinez entering the transfer portal, the Huskers needed a quarterback to man the position. Thompson ended up being their guy.

Wednesday, he detailed a little bit of the decision-making process he went through. On the field, Thompson played well for Texas last season. He threw for 2,113 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also managed to pass the 300-yard mark in three games this season.

In addition to finding a good fit at Nebraska, Thompson also had some familiarity with Scott Frost. Frost recruited Thompson while the coach was at UCF. Now, the two have a chance to reunite again.

While doing his research on Nebraska. Thompson watched film from 2020 and 2021. He also watched Pittsburgh film, to see what offensive coordinator Mark Whipple accomplished with quarterback Kenny Pickett. After scouring through film, he came to the conclusion that Nebraska would be the best program for him.

First, there was the decision-making process. As Thompson noted to the media on Wednesday, he started to get an idea of how he was going to handle things once he entered the portal on December 16.

For their part, Nebraska football  was one of the three he was choosing between. Oklahoma and Auburn were the other schools.

“Once I saw Nebraska’s quarterback Adrian Martinez decided to leave, I knew Nebraska would be on the table most likely,” Thompson said. “I was kind of just waiting to see what some other teams would do after the bowl game and so I put my name in the portal on Dec. 16. But in my mind, I told the Nebraska coaching staff and all the other teams right away, ‘Hey, I’m going to wait until after the bowl games end’ and I’m going to commit that first week of January.'”

Now, Thompson is in his first spring ball with the Nebraska football program. He has been impressing teammates with his work ethic. In what is going to be a long season, getting to Lincoln was the first step of his journey. There may be several other steps to follow, as he looks to win the starting quarterback job.
