Name, image, and likeness has been a hot-topic issue ever sense it was introduced last year. Nebraska football quarterback Casey Thompson spoke on Wednesday about several things including NIL. He believes that Nebraska is a very fruitful place for NIL.
There are some who are in favor of athletes making money off their name, image, and likeness. Others are against it. Whatever side people stand on, there is little doubt that the state of Nebraska is invested emotionally and financially in collegiate athletics. During football season, 90,000 fans at Memorial Stadium every Saturday.
Thompson believes that Nebraska is a productive place for an NIL, due largely in part to the support of the fan base. Thompson comes to the Nebraska football program from Texas. He threw for 2,113 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions last season. Currently, he is in the middle of spring practices, competing for the starting quarterback position.
Thompson sees NIL potential for Nebraska football
With that in mind, he also views Nebraska as a place where he, as well as others, could really thrive with NIL agreements. It is because of this fan support that he believes NIL deals can be successful in Lincoln, per a report from Brian Christopherson of 247Sports.
As for why he think the NIL stuff pops out at Nebraska, Thompson said, “I’d just say the community here is close-knit and everyone is kind of in the knowing, whereas Austin, Texas, is more spread out. It’s a big city. Here at Nebraska, if I go to a restaurant or go to a local high school basketball game, or even just going to the gym down the street to try to get some lifts in on the weekend, I’m going to end up getting stopped and having to take pictures and stuff like that. But it comes with it and I’ve really enjoyed it so far. I think the Nebraska fan base is awesome.”
Being one of Nebraska’s biggest transfer portal additions in the offseason, Thompson comes to Lincoln with a lot of excitement surrounding his arrival. As Nebraska football looks to continue to build up the program, Thompson’s endorsement in regards to state being an NIL hotspot certainly speaks volumes. Especially if Thompson can lead Nebraska to a winning season, endorsement deals could be a big part of his collegiate career.
As an NIL deals continue to dominate the college football landscape, it will be imperative for the Nebraska football and athletics programs alike to keep up with the times.
