Nebraska football undoubtedly has talent at the tight end position. Guys like Thomas Fidone, James Carnie, and Chris Hickman should be able to make an impact on offense.

However, it’s not just about their catches and receiving yards. Tight ends coach Sean Beckton also wants that position to be a little more precise in terms of route-running and hand placement on blocking. This is something that Nebraska football may want to really put an emphasis on, especially with the new talent in the remade running back room.

In terms of running routes, that should also have a major place in the offense as well. Nebraska football utilized tight ends a lot more. Austin Allen finished with 38 catches for 602 yards and two touchdowns last season. He really was able to find his groove. The  tight end position proved to be a big piece of what Nebraska did last year.

The attention to detail in terms of route-running and blocking should only help the quarterback room as well. Especially in terms of pass protection, blocking will be key.

Beckton was able to study the Pittsburgh tight ends from last season, and how they performed under Mark Whipple. He feels confident in the tight ends he has at Nebraska. They have the skill, now it’s just about working out the details, as noted in a report by 247Sports’ Brian Christopherson.

“I want those guys to be a little bit crisper in their route breaks, being able to make decisions off reading a linebacker underneath coverage and being able to play fast all the time – whatever coverage they see,” Beckton said. “I thought those guys from Pitt, they executed and knew what they were doing, but the precision wasn’t to my liking and I think we’re going to do better in that aspect of things.”

This emphasis is important for the Nebraska football program. Utilizing the tight ends can make their offense that much more potent. The Huskers already have strong receivers on the outside. Adding the tight ends to the mix once again would allow them to have a balance offensively.

It will be intriguing to see what type of dynamic the tight ends bring to the Nebraska football offense. With the type of skill the room has as well as the type of offense Nebraska will run, there is a lot of potential for success there.
