Sunday afternoon, Nebraska basketball landed a commitment from former North Dakota State point guard Sam Griesel per a report from Brian Christopherson of 247Sports.
Measuring in at 6-4-6, Griesel was a dependable player for the bison. He averaged 14.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 3.4 assess last season. He ended last season on a high note as well. He scored 26 points and went 10-of-15, including four-of-seven from the three-point line. Griesel proved to be a solid rebounder as well. He recorded five games of double-digit rebounds.
Griesel has a Nebraska basketball background as well. He was a high school standout, as he averaged 17 points a game in his senior season at Lincoln East.
This addition could be important for the Nebraska basketball program. It gives the program a true point third. This is something that they needed to address in the offseason, and they have an immediate impact player. As the roster shuffling continues for the program, they now have a player that is a spark plug and allows them to have a playmaker.
Not only do they have a playmaker, they have somebody with experience. He will be able to man the ship for Nebraska for next season if needed. It will be interesting to see what other moves they make. We have already seen changes within the coaching staff, and it would not be unreasonable to think that more changes will be coming.
In addition to getting a veteran, battle-tested point guard, Griesel gives Nebraska basketball options at the position should Bryce McGowens leaves for the NBA. That could be a very real possibility.
This was a good addition for Nebraska basketball in terms of both a depth and talent perspective. The Huskers may have to use the transfer portal to their advantage over the next couple of months, and this could be a strong addition for the program.
