Thursday, it was announced that Nebraska football wide receiver Zavier Betts was no longer a member of the program per multiple media reports.

Head coach Scott Frost made the announcement on Thursday, and this was confirmed by multiple media reports.

Betts recorded 32 receptions for  417 yards and a touchdown in 18 games for Nebraska. He also rushed the ball three times for 109 yards and a touchdown last season.

As a recruit, the Bellevue, Nebraska native was a four-star recruit. He was the top player in the 2020 class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He ranked as the 20th overall wide receiver in the class itself.

Betts showed potential for Nebraska in the wide receiver room, and he did give them a speedy playmaker. Measuring in at six-foot-two, 189 pounds, he was able to use that speed to make an impact on plays like jet sweeps. He was never able to parlay his efforts on the field into any sort of extended playing time.

Wide receiver was a position that Nebraska football focused heavily on recruiting this offseason. They were able to add several new names via the transfer portal as well. The addition of Mickey Joseph was able to breathe new life into the wide receiver room. Next, it’s going to be about showing results on the field.

This is a big loss for Nebraska in terms of the state’s high school football recruiting. Betts could have gotten a fresh start with the chance to work under Mickey Joseph. Nevertheless, he is electing to start fresh on his own terms.
