Nebraska Football: Garrett Nelson shines via pass rush in Spring Game

Saturday’s Nebraska football spring game was a good one for the defense. Overall, many defensive players performed well, and gave defensive coordinator Erik Chinander something to work with heading into fall camp. Garrett Nelson was among the many who had a strong day on Saturday.

He had two sacks on the day, to lead all Nebraska football defenders. His play was very evident of what we have seen from Nelson since he got to Lincoln. He was flying around the football, and was bringing that same tenacity we see from him on game day.

His instincts were on display Saturday, as he seemed to be involved in several defensive plays. He was aggressive, and it was evident that his main goal was to get to the quarterback. Nelson is a player who has been talked about quite a bit this spring. In March, he was talked about as a player who was emerging as a leader for the defense. He showed that with his play.

Pass-rushing a key piece for Nebraska football

His pass-rushing ability was something that stood out on Saturday. He has 6.5 sacks in three seasons at Nebraska. This includes a five-sack campaign in 2021. With 100 total tackles, Nelson has well-documented tackling ability. However, pass-rushing is also an element of the game.

That leadership and constant motor continued on Saturday. The entire play of the defense picked up in the second half, when tackling was allowed. It was during this timeframe that Nelson really shone brightly. Even if he did not get to the quarterback, Nelson was able to bring pressure and disrupt the timing of the offense.

For Nelson, this game was not about showing what he could do. Nebraska football fans and coaches already know what he can do. This was more about putting together a solid game and continuing his upward trajectory. Nelson figures to be a staple of this defense moving forward, and it was important for him to have a good Saturday in order solidify that hypothesis.
