Nebraska football had a busy weekend of visitors. As a result, some recruiting predictions went their way. 2023 interior defensive lineman Riley Van Poppel was one of the visitors on Saturday. Following his visit, he received predictions in Nebraska’s favor.
He is the 10th overall interior defensive lineman and the 25th overall player in his class in the state of Texas per the 247Sports composite rankings. On3 has him rated as a four-star recruit, and has given him a 92 overall numerical rating. He is being recruited to Nebraska by Brian Applewhite and Mike Dawson, the latter serving as the secondary recruiter.
Van Poppel recorded 40 tackles, seven sacks and 14 tackles for a loss in the 2021 season. He was a major defensive piece for Argyle High, as they advanced to the Texas 4A state quarterfinals.
Predictions trending for Nebraska football
The predictions for Nebraska were put in by Chad Simmons and Brian Munson. Simmons had a competence percentage of 60%, while Munson’s was a bit larger at 75%. Either way, those working in Nebraska’s favor. Van Poppel is somebody that they have recruited heavily, and he would be a key piece for a defensive line looking to continue to build.
Brian Applewhite is looking to establish a stronghold in the state of Texas, and this would be a good place to continue that. He seems to be the go-to Texas recruiter for this Nebraska football staff.
Currently, the 2023 Nebraska football recruiting class ranks 36th nationally and ninth overall in the Big 12 per the On3 recruiting rankings. They are six spots better than their class last year, they are three spots better in the Big Ten than last year, and their class score is 0.33 points better than 2022.
I’ll be interested to see if there are any other major developments with Van Poppel. It sounds like Nebraska is on the right track to land him, and I hope they are able to follow through.
