Nebraska Football: Markese Stepp enters transfer portal

Attrition has continued to hit the Nebraska football running back room as Markese Stepp entered the transfer portal on Tuesday.

Stepp initially came to Nebraska after transferring from USC. He carried the ball 45 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns in 2021. His best game as a member of the Huskers came on September 4 against for him. In that contest, he carried the ball 18 times for 101 yards.

He also battled with injuries during his time at Nebraska, and it seemed to be a theme throughout the course of the 2021 season.  When healthy, he proved to be a decent player. he ran the football hard, and he showed glimpses of his potential. Especially during the game against the Rams, he was a workhorse. However, it was all about getting him on the field.

Even when he was on the field, Nebraska did not run the football much with him. He rushed for a total of 47 yards in his final two games of the season.

At the time he transferred to Nebraska, I thought it was a really good pick up. At that point in time, Nebraska had a lot of youth in the running back room, and they certainly needed some veteran leadership.

Now, things are completely different. Nebraska has a new running backs coach in Brian Applewhite, and he has done solid work in terms of recruiting. Anthony Grant and Ajay Allen  are two new names within the program. Gabe Ervin  could be a piece as well. Simply put, there is not a ton of room at the running back position. aside from all of that, Applewhite probably wants to coach as many of his own guys as possible.

It will be intriguing to see how Nebraska football elects to fill the spot left by the running back’s departure. Stepp certainly had potential, but he was never able to reach it in Lincoln.
