There is no doubt that Nebraska football has several running backs that can be used ahead of the 2022 season. In fact, running back depth is one of the strengths of the program.
There has been a lot of turnover in the running back room, and one player who I feel is a little bit forgotten about is Rahmir Johnson.
He had a decent season last year, recording 112 carries for 495 yards and four touchdowns. He also made an impact in the receiving game, recording 16 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns.
We’ve talked a little bit about it on the show. Nebraska football has a lot of running back talent. They need to figure out how to get as many running backs on the field as possible.
I have Johnson fairly high up on my depth chart, and it sounds like the coaches are finding a role for him. It sounds like he is going to spend a lot of time in the slot position, as well as get some work on special teams per Steven M. Sipple of On3.
This is something that I can certainly get behind. Putting Johnson in the slot allows him to be able to utilize two of his biggest assets. First, he has the speed to be effective out of the slot. Secondly, he can make things happen after the catch. He is a very solid receiving back, and is a dynamic playmaker with the ball in his hands.
Thirdly, it allows for him still be able to be on the field, without being in the backfield. This allows for players like Gabe Ervin and Anthony Grant to really be the belle cows back there. Putting your best playmakers on the field is crucial. Having Johnson in more of a wide receiving type of role allows it to happen. It allows for your best athletes to get a shot equally.
I am curious to see how this will look offensively. However, I like how it sounds. One of Nebraska football biggest issues was not knowing how to utilize personnel. It sounds like they are doing a better job of trying to figure that out this year.
