Nebraska Football: Ochaun Mathis starting to find his groove

Nebraska football had a ton of good defensive performances on Friday night. One that is definitely worthy of mentioning is defensive end Ochaun Mathis. He had another big day, as he was able to help the Nebraska football defensive unit play at a high level once again.

Mathis had four total tackles and a sack on Friday evening. For Mathis, he recorded his first sack since the University of North Dakota game on September 3. Aside from just the statistics, he looked comfortable in terms of his play.

One of the things he has been really good at is getting pressure on the quarterback. Pressure doesn’t always show up on the statistics sheet. Nevertheless, it disrupts opposing offenses, and forces opposing quarterbacks to rush their throws.

He also had a crucial tip at the end of the fourth quarter. Rutgers had one final drive to try and get into field goal range. Nebraska’s defense had to make a strong stand, as Rutgers wanted to throw the ball deep. Evans Simon dropped back to pass, and Mathis was able to react quickly enough to just get his hands on the football and tipped it enough. Because the ball was tipped, that negated a potential defensive pass interference penalty.

It may seem like a little play in the grand scheme of things, but it was huge in determining the outcome of the game. Mathis played aggressively all night . That allowed for him to be around the football quite a bit. This is a very good thing for Nebraska football, as it looks like he is beginning to feel comfortable in this defense.

He is playing more aggressively, and playing with that burst that we saw in his TCU highlights. It looks like he is really starting to figure out his role on this team. If he continues to have performances like he did on Friday night, this would be huge news for the defense.

Don’t look now, but Ochaun Mathis is starting to find his groove.
