Nebraska Football o-line is abysmal, no improvement in sight

I hate to be so pessimistic about any part of the game on Friday night. After all, Nebraska football came away with a tough victory on the road.  There really is a lot to celebrate about Friday night . A win streak is always nice. Nevertheless, there was one particular unit that really struggled. The offensive line was a mess on Friday night, and I don’t see it getting any better.

Quarterback Casey Thompson did not really have a ton of time to throw. It seemed like there were Rutgers defenders nipping at his heels every play. This created rushed throws and it seemed like Thompson did not have any time to make his reads. This has been a problem all season, but I feel as though the line really got exposed on Friday night.

All told, Rutgers only tallied one sack and a quarterback hurry. However, it seemed a lot worse than that, as Thompson was forced to make tough decisions while running out of the pocket. Even when he stayed in the pocket, it seemed like Rutgers defenders were able to get to him at will. For example, take a look at this play towards the end of the game. You will see Hunter Anthony struggle to defend his man on the edge. This forces Thompson to make a read quicker than he wanted to.

It wasn’t just Anthony that struggled however. It was also others such as Turner Corcoran . He, quite frankly has struggled all season. He was once a four-star recruit, and now has become a player that has regressed hugely. Corcoran was supposed to be a key piece of the Nebraska football offensive line. Instead, he is a major part of their struggles. Take a look at this play for example.

The frustrating part of all of this is, I don’t see them getting any better. This group is who they are at this point in the season. This group is a work in progress, and I think it’s going to be about game planning with them in mind. Nebraska football is going to have to figure out how to generate sustained offense with this line. They are who they are, and it is going to be a struggle for Casey Thompson and the offense to have a sustained offensive game because of how this unit is playing.

This is not all Donovan Raiola’s  fault. He has been put in a difficult situation as far as personnel and is trying to fix something that has been a mess for quite a while. He hasn’t exactly made them better though, either. This team has won spite of the line, and I truly think that’s a testament to the players on that side of the ball. This offensive line unit is not good, and no amount of quick fixes can save it.
