Tristan Alvano recruiting strategy echoes throughout class

Nebraska football is assessing the pieces following a successful early signing day that saw the class ranked at 28th in the country. The class itself features impact players, and that includes kicker Tristan Alvano.

Alvano was a three-star signee, and should be able to help anchor Nebraska football’s special teams unit. He went 16-of-20 on field goals last year and made all 70 of his extra points. The Nebraska football program has struggled in the special teams area for a number of seasons. Recently, they found success with placekicker Timmy Bleekrode. They could have additional success with Alvano waiting in the wings.

Special teams coordinator Ed Foley knew that Nebraska football had to land Alvano. After reviewing the film of the kicker, Foley knew that Alfano could be a key piece for Nebraska special teams for the future.

247Sports’ Brian Christopherson interviewed Foley on Thursday, the morning after Nebraska completed an impressive early signing day class that ranks 29th in the country. Foley detailed the recruiting process for Alvano, and through his evaluation process, one thing became abundantly clear.

After looking at the film, Foley said the verdict from the staff was clear: “We can’t let this guy go. Wow.” He talked to others who believed Alvano was among the top two or three high school kickers in the country.

Nebraska has seemed to have taken that approach with several in-state prospects. Currently, the 2023 Nebraska football recruiting class has eight kids in the class alone. The highest-rated is wide receiver Malachi Coleman, who is a four-star recruit.

Nebraska football made it a point to keep in place in-state kids home. They did that with several Nebraska kids already in the class, including Alvano. It would not be a stretch to say that Foley’s thoughts on Alvano’s recruitment was a strategy employed for this 2023 recruiting class.

More talent is coming in the state of Nebraska for 2024. It will be intriguing to see what the coaching staff does with future classes down the road.
