Former Nebraska football wide receiver Zavier Betts intends to rejoin the program at some point this year. This news was first reported by The Athletic’s Mitch Sherman.

Betts was a prized recruit in the Nebraska football 2020 class. He made an impact on the field almost immediately, recording 12 catches for 131 yards in his freshman season. The 2021 campaign saw him produce higher numbers, as he tallied 20 receptions for 286 yards, averaging 14.3 yards per reception.

Betts was part of a 2020 Nebraska football recruiting class that was highly regarded at the time. He was the  second-highest rated recruit in the 2020 class, and he was the top player in his class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports Rankings.

What does this mean for Nebraska Football?

His return would be a big one for the Nebraska football wide receiver room. He has a unique blend of speed and playmaking ability. One of the memorable plays of his first stint with Nebraska showcased that speed. He took a slip past 45 yards around the end for a touchdown against Penn State on November 14, 2020, padding Nebraska’s lead at the time of the score.

In addition to his playmaking ability, he would also give the Nebraska football program a veteran in the wide receiver room. There is a lot of young talent at the position. Betts would give that room time to develop if he came back. This would also give the offense another playmaking option at the wide receiver spot.

The speed Betts possesses would undoubtedly fit with the type of offense Nebraska football wants to run. Speed is important in today’s wide receiver room. He certainly fits that bill.

The wide receiver did not reach his full potential during his first stint with Nebraska. It is possible that Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule and his staff could get the most out of the receiver. It would be a fresh start for everybody involved, and it would give the local talent a chance to shine in a Nebraska uniform.
