Nebraska Football lands high upside player in MJ Sherman

Nebraska football received a commitment from former Georgia linebacker MJ Sherman on Monday morning. This news was first reported by InsideNebraska’s Zack Carpenter.

Sherman played as a reserve linebacker for Georgia in the 2022 season. He played in all 13 games, and had two solo tackles against Penn State and a quarterback pressure in a victory over Georgia Tech. His best season came in 2021, when he recorded seven tackles on the season.

As a recruit, he was a four-star linebacker. He was the second overall outside linebacker in the 2020 class, and the second overall player in the District of Columbia per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

How will he help Nebraska football?

He brings a disruptive edge defender to the Nebraska football program. The Huskers have done a solid job in bringing in edge recruits. Cameron Lenhardt and  Princewill Umanmielen are two players that can certainly fit there. However, Sherman is another guy that can play that spot.

This gives Nebraska football depth at a position where they need it. In the 3-3-5 defense, solid edge-rushers  are key, and Sherman fits the bill. This was a need for Nebraska football in this type of defense, and they got another impact player at that spot.

Currently, the 2023 Nebraska football recruiting class has nine transfer commitments.  Sherman ranks as the highest commitment in the class, and has a numerical rating of just over 98.

This is an important pickup for Nebraska football, as they look to refine that defense in the coming months. Sherman could be a great scheme fit, as Nebraska may have to rely heavily on the secondary.

Getting a player like Sherman will allow them to get pressure both on the edge and in the backfield. This will make for a complete defense, and should give defensive coordinator Tony White a solid option to work with.
