An armed vehicle theft suspect was shot by a Woodbury police officer and a sheriff’s deputy outside a Target store on Monday morning in a shocking turn of events.
An unattended car with stolen license plates was reported, and that’s how the incident in the parking lot of the Valley Creek Plaza shopping complex in Woodbury, Minnesota, came to pass.
The suspect, who is thought to be in his 50s, showed up as the police were checking the car and got into a fight with them as they tried to take him into custody. The fact that the guy was carrying a pistol caused the police to back off.
After that, the guy withdrew into the car and locked himself inside. The subject refused to cooperate even after less-lethal weapons were used and attempts were made to speak with him.
The suspect got out of the car at around 10:30 a.m. and started pointing his pistol at the police. The suspect was hurt when a Woodbury policeman and a deputy retaliated by firing their weapons.
The injured suspect’s present status is unknown, however he was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul for treatment.
The deputy and the cop who were engaged in the incident have both been placed on regular administrative leave in accordance with policy. The shooting is being investigated by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, while Woodbury police are investigating the first auto theft incident.
More information about the incident will be released by the authorities at a press conference on Monday at 3 p.m. Live streaming of the event will be available on multiple platforms, such as the CBS News app, Pluto TV, and CBS News Minnesota.
