At a press conference at the University of Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis talked about the recent pro-Palestine demonstrations and encampments taking place at colleges across the country.
Highlighting Florida’s position, DeSantis said, “We don’t do that in the state of Florida,” in reference to demonstrations that some claimed went beyond the bounds of free expression by endorsing violence.
Nine people were arrested at the University of Florida and three at the University of South Florida in Tampa as a result of recent demonstrations.
DeSantis acknowledged a brief effort at encampment at Florida University but pointed out that it was removed in a matter of minutes.
The governor also emphasized HB 1473, a new bill that aims to improve door and perimeter safety measures in schools, with the goal of enacting them before the next academic year.
