The Rise and Fall of Ellaville
George F. Drew, a successful businessman with a sawmill and a railroad, built Ellaville in 1861. Drew developed the town, which became a hub of trade and culture in the area, with a mansion, a hotel, a school, a church, and other merchants. At its height, Ellaville was home to over 1,000 people, and notable visitors included Mark Twain and President Grover Cleveland.
But Ellaville’s prosperity was short-lived. The overharvesting and rivalry from neighboring states caused the timber sector to collapse in the late 1800s. In 1897, Drew gave up running his railroad and sawmill and left the community. When Ellaville lost its primary source of income and access to transportation, its population and businesses started to decline. The town was essentially abandoned by the 1920s, and by the 1940s, it had been abandoned entirely.
The Remains of Ellaville
Ellaville is a dead town now, gradually being taken over by nature. The remains of Drew’s mansion and hotel, covered in vines and graffiti, are the only remaining structures. The remaining portion of the village is covered with plants, rubble, and soil. The sporadic visitors who come to learn more about the mystery and history of the town are the sole indications of human activity.
Ellaville is situated next to the Suwannee River State Park in Suwannee County. There are no maps of the settlement, and the only way to get there is by a dirt road that ends at a barred gate. To enter the village, visitors must acquire permission from the landowner, the Suwannee River Water Management District. The district issues a warning that the town is unstable and unsafe and requests that guests exercise caution and civility.

Ellaville is only one of the several deserted villages with mysteries and tales that adorn the landscape of America.
